Press Release: Terry Fox Run Celebrates its 33rd Anniversary

The Marathon of Hope Lives On!

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 December 2013 – Over 6,000 Malaysians from all walks of life came together at the Terry Fox Run 2013 in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa yesterday to show their commitment and support for cancer research.

This year’s run was flagged off at 8.15am by YM Tunku Tan Sri Dato Seri Ahmad Yahaya, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) and Mr. Doug Bingeman, Acting High Commissioner for Canada, with individuals walking, running, cycling and skating around the scenic 3 km Family and 5 km Advanced routes.

“On behalf of the Terry Fox Run KL Organizing Committee, we would like to thank you for your support and generous donations this year. We truly appreciate your contribution and commitment in the fight against cancer,” said Jo Tan, Chairman of the Terry Fox Run KL 2013 committee.

The Terry Fox Run is the largest single day fundraiser for cancer research in the world and is celebrated in honour of Terry Fox, a young Canadian and cancer patient who began the ‘Marathon of Hope’ – his inspiring journey to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. With one leg amputated, Terry Fox became a national hero running for 143 days, completing 5,373 km before he passed away in 1981.

The Terry Fox Foundation was established that year to continue his legacy by hosting a run the same time every year. Since then, the Terry Fox Run has been held in over 50 countries throughout the world and has raised more than RM 1.3 billion in aid of finding a cure for cancer through the Terry Fox Foundation.

To date, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than RM 1 million for cancer research in Malaysia since its first run in 2001. Last year, the event attracted more than 6,000 participants and raised over RM 239,000.

This year, more than 13,000 exclusive Terry Fox Run 2013 T-shirts were sold before the run, and the proceeds of the T-shirts sales will be channeled to CARIF, the beneficiary of this year’s run.

The Terry Fox Foundation has also embraced the role cancer survivors play in the annual Terry Fox Run. Known as Terry’s Team Members, they continue to be symbols of hope for others who are stricken with cancer and undergoing the hardships of cancer treatment. Most importantly, they serve as a reminder of the legacy Terry Fox left behind, to be the voice for cancer research for the world over.

This year, the Terry Fox Run KL once again welcomed all cancer survivors to sign up as Terry’s Team Members. 100 exclusive Terry’s Team T-shirts were handed out to these participants identifying them as special members of the Terry Fox Run KL.

“We would like to thank all the Terry Fox Run 2013 participants, volunteers and donors. With so many Malaysian families touched by cancer, we are honored to see thousands of dedicated people come together for this cause each year. Your support really makes a difference in helping to achieve a future without cancer,” said Prof. Dr Teo Soo-Hwang, Chief Executive, CARIF.
